Poverty As a Weapon: Former Lawmaker Exposes Nigeria’s Political EliteMalik Madaki Bosso, a former lawmaker from Niger State, has voiced deep concern over the worsening hunger and poverty affecting millions of Nigerians.
Bosso claimed that many politicians are deliberately keeping citizens impoverished and hungry to exploit them for political gains. He criticized the current leadership for only showing interest in the people during election periods, while ignoring their needs during difficult times.
In a message delivered during the Sallah celebration, Bosso called on Nigerians to reflect on their living conditions, stressing that while the festival is usually a time of joy, many are unable to celebrate due to widespread hardship and deprivation.
He noted that despite a significant rise in federal allocations — with monthly disbursements increasing from around ₦750 billion under the previous administration to between ₦1.4 and ₦2.4 trillion — poverty and insecurity have continued to rise.
“How do we explain this?” he asked. “Government earnings have nearly doubled, yet people are suffering more. When it’s time to assist the public, those in power suddenly claim there’s no money.”
Bosso further alleged that politicians often hand out cash during campaigns to win votes, only to abandon the electorate once they’re elected.
He urged leaders at all levels to fulfill their constitutional responsibilities by focusing on the welfare and security of the people. He also encouraged Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable and to resist manipulative tactics from self-serving politicians.
“Don’t allow greedy politicians to use your hunger against you during elections,” he warned.
Bosso also appealed for urgent support for communities like Mokwa, still reeling from a recent flood disaster. He called on government officials not to turn their backs on people in distress.
