The travel ban will take effect on June 9, 2025, at 12:01 AM EDT (5:01 AM Nigerian time).
“We will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm,” Trump said in a video shared on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter).
Trump explained that the nations facing the strictest bans were flagged for hosting a “significant presence of terrorist elements.” Others, he claimed, were unable or unwilling to meet U.S. security standards, including inadequate identity verification, poor criminal record documentation, and excessive visa overstay rates.
He added that the list is subject to revision, with more countries potentially being added depending on compliance with U.S. security protocols.
“We cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen those who seek to enter the United States,” he emphasized.
The decision is expected to spark international debate as nations affected weigh their responses.
