Eid-el-Kabir: Low Patronage Hits Damaturu Livestock Market Amid High Price
Published on June 5, 2025

Just hours before the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, livestock sellers at the Damaturu market have voiced concerns over poor patronage, attributing the drop in sales to soaring prices of sacrificial animals.

Despite an abundance of rams, goats, and sheep brought in from across Yobe State and neighboring regions, the number of buyers remains worryingly low.

Price Hike Blamed
Speaking to DAILY POST, livestock dealers like Salisu Sa’adu and Ali Alhaji Mohammed highlighted a significant increase in prices—between 70% and 80% compared to the previous year.

“Rams that sold for N70,000 to N80,000 last year now go for N200,000 to N250,000,” said Sa’adu.

“We even have rams priced at N800,000 to N1,000,000,” Mohammed added.

Buyers Hold Out for Last-Minute Discounts
Frustrated buyers lamented the unaffordability of the animals and indicated plans to delay purchases until Eid day, hoping prices might drop as sellers seek to avoid carrying unsold stock.
