Social critic Ifeanyi Ejiofor has sharply criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for spending hundreds of millions of naira monthly on what he calls a “grandiose” media chat with little meaningful impact.
Ejiofor condemned the extravagant exercise as a waste of public funds, especially at a time when millions of Nigerians are suffering severe economic hardships, including inflation, stagnant wages, and rising poverty.
The former lead lawyer for IPOB questioned the justification for such expensive media events, pointing out that many Nigerians survive on less than $2 a day while lacking basic healthcare, education, and shelter.
In a statement titled ‘Extravagance in a Time of Hardship – President Tinubu Must Curb FCT Minister Wike’s Costly Media Show,’ Ejiofor highlighted how the funds spent on one media episode could instead provide emergency relief for flood victims, refurbish primary schools, equip rural clinics, or support nutrition programs in IDP camps.
Calling the spectacle “disheartening” and “tone-deaf,” Ejiofor insisted Nigerians want competent governance and prudent spending, not televised extravagance.
He concluded with a direct call to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: “Call the FCT Minister to order, halt this wasteful spending, and redirect focus to service delivery. Nigeria deserves better. The time to act is now.”
