World’s Next Super City? Bill Gates Says It’s Lagos – Here’s WhyMicrosoft co-founder and philanthropist, Bill Gates, has voiced a bold vision for Africa’s future, predicting that Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, is on track to become the largest city in the world.

Speaking during the Gates Foundation’s Goalkeepers event in Lagos, Gates highlighted Africa’s growing influence in global affairs, calling the continent “the most fascinating of the 21st century” due to its youthful and rapidly growing population.

“Africa is a remarkably young continent,” Gates said. “Over half of all children born in this century will be African. That youth will have a major impact on the direction of the world.”

He pointed to Lagos as a clear example of the continent’s accelerating urban development. “The city we are in today is expected to become the largest on the planet. That means a fast-paced, energetic future that will capture global attention,” Gates noted.

However, he emphasized that Africa’s rise will depend heavily on the decisions made now—especially in health care and education.

“The potential is immense, but it hinges on the investments we make today,” Gates said. “With smart choices, the future of Africa can be truly remarkable.”
