Nigeria Loses a Titan Of Justice: Mohammed Uwais Is DeadNigeria is mourning the loss of a towering figure in its legal history, as former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, has died at the age of 89.
The news of his passing was confirmed in an official statement released by his family on Friday, June 6, 2025.
Born on June 12, 1936, in Zaria, Kaduna State, Justice Uwais held the position of Chief Justice from 1995 until his retirement in 2006. Throughout his distinguished career, he earned national acclaim for his unwavering commitment to judicial independence, rule of law, and constitutional governance.
“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihir Rajiun. With hearts filled with sorrow and submission to the will of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala, we announce the demise of our beloved father, Justice Mohammed Lawal Uwais, former Chief Justice of the Federation,” the family said in a solemn announcement.
Funeral prayers for the late jurist are scheduled to take place immediately after Juma’at prayers at the National Mosque, Abuja, according to the family.
Justice Uwais leaves behind a profound legacy, survived by his children, grandchildren, and an enduring influence on Nigeria’s legal system that will be remembered for generations.
