“Nigeria Is Now A Crime Scene” – Peter Obi Blows Whistle Over ₦210 Trillion NNPC Scandal Exposed By Senate

“No nation survives this level of organized theft” – Peter Obi
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has issued a scathing rebuke of Nigeria’s public governance system, describing the country as a nation hijacked by monumental corruption—a damning reaction to the Senate’s shocking revelation of ₦210 trillion in unaccounted funds in the NNPC’s audited accounts.
In a statement on Friday, Obi declared, “Nigeria has become a crime scene.” His outrage follows the Senate Committee on Public Accounts’ findings of massive financial irregularities in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited’s (NNPC) books between 2017 and 2023.
Chaired by Senator Aliyu Wadada, the Senate investigation revealed that NNPC’s Chief Financial Officer, Adedapo Segun, failed to justify enormous legal and audit fees or explain inconsistencies in receivables amounting to over ₦210 trillion—a figure more than double the nation’s entire budget within that period.
“₦103 trillion in vague ‘accrued expenses’ and another ₦107 trillion in untraceable receivables,” Obi emphasized.
“No documents. No accountability. No consequences.”
The breakdown of Nigeria’s total budgets from 2017 to 2023 paints a disturbing picture:
Total: ₦88.01 trillion
The ₦210 trillion discrepancy dwarfs this sum, highlighting what Obi calls “institutionalized criminality masquerading as governance.”
“This is not just another scandal—it is a betrayal of Nigerians on an industrial scale. What hope does a country have when theft exceeds its entire national spending?” Obi asked.
He stressed that this level of looting is a threat to national survival and the future of generations to come. He called for immediate accountability, systemic reform, and the political will to end impunity in high places.
“No responsible nation continues like this. This rot must be dismantled. A new Nigeria is POssible,” Obi concluded in his message on 𝕏.
As the public reels from this eye-watering revelation, pressure mounts on the federal government to respond decisively. For now, many Nigerians are left wondering: who will be held accountable—if anyone at all?
