Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has firmly dismissed rumors of a shadow cabal controlling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Speaking on Thursday at the 2025 OAU Distinguished Personality Lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Wike declared that President Tinubu is fully in charge of his government.
Wike, a former Rivers State Governor, lauded Tinubu’s decisiveness and leadership, emphasizing that the president’s governance is free from hidden influences.
“He has shown that he has the courage. Under Tinubu, there is nothing like cabal. This is a president that is in charge,” Wike said.
Taking a swipe at previous administrations, Wike argued that former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan lacked the political will to take bold economic steps, such as ending fuel subsidies or unifying exchange rates. He credited Tinubu’s administration for finally removing fuel subsidies, which he said would have otherwise continued benefiting fraudsters.
Despite acknowledging Nigeria’s underperformance since independence, Wike remained optimistic about the nation’s potential for greatness under strong leadership and sound systems.
“Though Nigeria has underperformed in the last six decades since independence, and all imaginable fault lines are cracking, the nation can still rise and blaze in glory,” he said.
Wike stressed the importance of rebuilding trust and fostering national unity, urging Nigerians to commit to deliberate and inclusive nation-building.
“The desired Nigeria won’t fall from heaven. It will require vision, sacrifice, hard work and purpose. Let us leave for the next generation resolves and not regrets,” he stated.
Addressing critics calling for his removal as FCT Minister, Wike defended his capability, questioning the judgment of those who doubt his performance.
“Something is wrong with those who say I lack the capacity to deliver,” he declared.
He also reaffirmed his tough stance on Abuja’s ground rent defaulters, insisting they must settle their debts.
“Ground rent debtors must pay their outstanding debts. Heaven will not fall if they do so,” he said firmly.
The lecture was attended by notable dignitaries, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; and former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Samuel Ortom (Benue), among others.
