Wike Declares: “Only Tinubu Loyalists Will Get My Support”

Meta Description

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says he will back only leaders who support President Tinubu, signaling a shift in Abuja’s politics where loyalty, not party, determines access to projects.

A Clear Message from Abuja’s Powerhouse

Nigeria’s political scene thrives on shifting alliances, and once again, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has reminded everyone that he plays politics differently. At the flag-off of the Lot 2 Water Supply Project in Karu, Wike made it clear: his support belongs only to those who stand with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The former Rivers State Governor didn’t mince words:

“Anybody who supports Tinubu, I will support him.”

That statement, delivered before residents of Karu, underlines not just Wike’s loyalty to the President but also his willingness to shape Abuja’s local politics in Tinubu’s image.

Promises Backed with Projects

Wike’s declaration wasn’t just rhetoric. He immediately pledged to construct a 2km road in Karu, acting on a request by former FCT Senator Philip Aduda. He also applauded AMAC Chairman Christopher Maikalangu for attracting projects such as the Saburi Road, Kabusa-Takushere Road, and Deidei Road.

“For me, I’m here to talk about those who have access to government and bring something to the people,” Wike said, framing access to infrastructure as a reward for political alignment.

Beyond Party Lines: Loyalty Over Labels

Perhaps the most striking part of Wike’s remarks was his dismissal of party affiliation. He stressed that he didn’t care which party a leader belonged to — what mattered was their support for Tinubu’s agenda.

This is particularly significant in the case of Maikalangu, who defected from the PDP to the APC in 2024 and is now seeking re-election in 2026. Wike’s open endorsement positions him as a beneficiary of this new “Tinubu test” for political backing.

Taking Aim at the Past, Elevating Tinubu

Wike also used the occasion to score political points by contrasting Tinubu’s performance with previous governments. He accused past administrations of neglecting Karu, particularly in water supply, while hailing Tinubu’s commitment to delivering potable water to satellite towns.

He described this as a “covenant kept”, telling residents that development under Tinubu’s government was proof that “agreement is agreement.”

What This Means for Abuja Politics

Wike’s remarks highlight some crucial trends:

  1. Tinubu’s Influence Is Growing in the FCT – By tying development to loyalty, Tinubu is consolidating grassroots power in Abuja through his key ally.

  2. Party Politics Are Fading – Wike’s stance shows that personal loyalty trumps party loyalty, at least in his political playbook.

  3. Development as Political Capital – Roads, water, and infrastructure are not just public goods; they are becoming bargaining chips in Nigeria’s power dynamics.

Final Take

For Karu residents, the politics may be secondary — what matters is water flowing in their homes and roads being built. But for Abuja’s political class, Wike’s statement is a clear warning: in today’s FCT, standing with Tinubu is the only currency that counts.

Whether this strengthens governance by aligning leaders or entrenches patronage politics is a debate Nigerians must confront. For now, Wike has drawn his line in the sand: support Tinubu, and he’ll support you.
