SERAP Demands Tinubu Replace Alleged APC Members On INEC With Qualified, Non-Partisan Nigerians

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his appointment of at least three alleged All Progressives Congress (APC) members as Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement by deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP urged the President to nominate qualified Nigerians of unquestionable integrity who are not affiliated with any political party to ensure the commission’s independence and restore public confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

SERAP also called on the Attorney General, Abubakar Malami, to introduce legislation to strengthen INEC’s autonomy. The group emphasized that without a truly impartial electoral body, Nigeria’s democratic process remains vulnerable.

This appeal follows Tinubu’s 2023 nominations, which included confirmed RECs Etekamba Umoren, Isah Shaka Ehimeakne, Bunmi Omoseyindemi, and Anugbum Onuoha, all alleged APC members.
