Benue: “How Can You Parade While Citizens Lie Dead?” – NNPP Slams Tinubu, Governor Alia Over Fanfare Amid National Tragedy

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has fiercely condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia over what it called a “callous and theatrical” response to the recent bloodbath in Yelewata, Guma LGA, where over 200 Nigerians were brutally killed in yet another attack by suspected armed herdsmen.
In a statement on Thursday, NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, blasted the federal government’s response as lukewarm, tone-deaf, and focused more on photo ops than people.
🩸 “A Killing Field With No End in Sight”
Johnson lamented that Benue has become a recurring symbol of state failure, where lives are lost with increasing regularity while leadership offers little more than speeches and delay.
“This was a horrifying act of mass murder. Over 200 innocent Nigerians were slaughtered without provocation. Yet, it took the government days to meaningfully react,” he said.
He also criticized President Tinubu’s remarks at a Makurdi stakeholders’ meeting, calling them detached and directionless.
“The President asked, ‘How come no arrest has been made?’ That’s the same question citizens have asked for years. Why is there still no justice? No sense of urgency?”
🎭 “A Carnival in the Face of Carnage”
NNPP expressed outrage over a leaked directive allegedly from a presidential aide, instructing Governor Alia to stage a colorful welcome procession for Tinubu — a spectacle that took place mere days after the massacre.
“Such fanfare amid tragedy reveals a stunning lack of empathy,” Johnson stated.
“Parading schoolchildren and organizing processions while families bury their dead? This was not a celebration moment; it was a time for solemn mourning.”
🤝 “Negotiating With Terror?”
Johnson also condemned Tinubu’s alleged suggestion that victims’ communities should “dialogue” with their attackers — a comment many saw as a tone-deaf misunderstanding of the gravity of the crisis.
“How do you ask grieving families to sit with the same people who murdered their children and razed their homes?”
“These are not communal clashes. These are acts of terrorism — and must be treated as such.”
He argued that until the government properly labels and treats these attacks as terrorism, the violence will continue unchecked.
🚨 “Justice First — Or Blood Will Keep Flowing”
According to the NNPP, the federal government must drop the optics-driven governance and start delivering real solutions.
“Enough with the performative visits, hollow condolences, and empty speeches,” the statement continued.
“What Nigerians need is security, justice, and real leadership that understands the weight of this moment.”
💬 Final Word
As Benue buries yet another round of victims, the soul of the nation is being tested. Can Nigeria remain silent while mass murder is followed by music, and grief is drowned out by drums and banners?
The NNPP says never again.
And they’re not just demanding accountability — they’re calling for a complete shift in leadership mindset: from theatrics to tangible action.
“Put the people before the pageantry,” Johnson said. “That’s what true leadership demands — especially in times like this.”
